Starting with version 1.9.0.9, when you "Save-as" and choose a format of "BMP Picture" or lower on the radio button list, the program tries to save in the next file format down the list. I.e. request to save as BMP, program tries to save as JPEG (if JPEG plug in is installed) or uncompressed BMP (if JPEG plug in is not installed) - I tried both ways. Or try to save as Uncompressed BMP and program tries to save as WAV audio. Etc. Select WAV audio and it rolls around to try to save to .grf format.

Everything seems to work OK if you select enhanced metafile or higher on the list.
