Web update ceased to work

Post by akselfr »

Dave,

Actually this is probably not a bug per se, but for odd
(Windows XP) reasons, I had to un-install and re-install DPLOT,
and somewhat to my surprise the convenient Web update
facility no longer works.
Any clues - Registry settings, or .. ?

Define "doesn't work"? What exactly happens?

If you installed the full version of DPlot then you should have the two files WEBUPDATESVC.EXE and WEBUPDATESVC.LIC in the same folder where DPLOT.EXE resides (default location is c:\Program Files\DPlot). If you instead ran the setup program for the trial version, those two files would not have been installed... but then I'd think you would also notice the annoying watermarks on your plots, so this probably isn't it.

Dave,

Sorry for this late reply. I have installed the full v.2.1.3.2, previously received via the update facility. After re-installing again there is no trace of the WEBUPDATESVC.EXE file in the install directory, which explains why nothing happens when I click the update button, but I can't figure out why the said exe-file does not install. All plots are OK as usual.

Dave,

No need to react. I copied the exe-file from a colleague's installation.
Everything now works OK.

Good, thanks for letting me know.

FYI the WEBUPDATESVC.EXE isn't included in the "Check for Updates" version. As far as I know and can tell the only way your problem might have happened is if you inadvertently deleted the file. I've tried to think up a weird sequence of install/uninstall/Check for Updates that would leave you w/o that file, but haven't been able to come up with anything that makes sense yet.
