Bar Chart error message seems incorrect.

Post by John »

Unless I'm missing something, when I tried to change a line graph into a bar chart, I got an error message to the effect that "the values of the ordinate must be monotonically increasing."

Shouldn't this message have read "the values of the abscissa must be monotonically increasing," as the ordinate values can both increase and decrease non-monotonically (as in my bar chart case)?

I figured out that while the line chart as displayed had the x-axis (abscissa) values monotonically increasing, the data itself, as entered, had monotonically decreasing values for x. I went to the data editor and clicked on the "sort" button (it sorted from low to high on the x values) and all was well when I converted it to a bar graph. The ordinate values were, as to be expected, not monotonically increasing.

That's correct. Thanks for pointing out the goof.
